Imagine (Original Soundtrack)

Live in New York City

The U.S. vs. John Lennon

Mind Games

Working Class Hero

Walls and Bridges

The enduring legacy of John Lennon's best album has overshadowed a glaring historical irony: the Beatles' original architect was also responsible for some of the Fab Four's most erratic solo albums. His recording projects all too often held hostage to polemics both personal and political, Lennon's conflicting artistic sensibilities arguably reached perfect balance just once. Coproduced with an uncharacteristically subtle touch by Phil Spector (a stark contrast to his dense aural constructions for George Harrison's All Things Must Pass from the same period), this is Lennon as whole man. Here he exhibits childlike utopian optimism (the title track), extends romantic paeans to the love of his life ("Oh Yoko!" "Oh My Love," and "Jealous Guy," the latter two begun as White Album demos) and spews bitter, petty acrimony toward his former songwriting partner ("How Do You Sleep?"). Set against such expressions, Lennon's fervent antiestablishment tirades ("I Don't Want to Be a Soldier," "Gimme Some Truth") took on some real weight and perspective, while his dollops of introspection ("How?" "Crippled Inside") have an air of resignation missing from the vitriol of his personal exorcism, Plastic Ono Band. This digitally remixed/remastered redux of the album may invoke the ire of the historically retentive, but it was accomplished under the aegis of Yoko Ono with an ear for clarity and a little more of John Lennon's complex, but always gratifying, soul. --Jerry McCulley

 "imagine that" 2010-04-23
By Jim (College Station, Texas United States)
Lennon's a hard guy to understand--I mean, he was a Beatle, and he was Lennon of Lennon and McCartney. But he couldn't recognize his own talent--he lashes out at McCartney in the childish, prating "How Do You Sleep," while the title track is obviously his attempt to write "Let it Be." He even quotes a musical phrase from "The Long and Winding Road" in "How?" This guy was recognized as one of the greatest songwriters in the world, but here he seems to be trying to BE McCartney while lashing out at him at the same time.

This is NOT a great album. I love Lennon, but people love this album because they rally behind his bitterness--something that makes the kumbaya of the title track even more shallow than it is on the surface. Lennon blabbered a lot about love and peace, but he was always a selfish, bitter person. And please, how can you not listen to the title track and not think it's the Communist national anthem?

"Possibly the most over-rated album ever" 2010-01-18
By Herman Sutter (Houston, TX USA)
Possibly the most over rated album of the rock era, this is bad politics married to catchy tunes by a shallow thinking pop-star. If you need proof, listen to the title song: "Imagine there's no heaven, it's easy if you try... not thinking to live or die for... above us only sky..." Perfect description of Pol Pot's reign of terror. Then the cute attack on Paul McCartney, and the pop ditty about Yoko... Lennon's musical value is muddied by all the adulation. He isn't horrible as a pop song writer, actually pretty good; but his gift gets lost in the legend and this album attained legendary status much too quickly to be of any real value; which is part of the problem with all rock music criticism.

"Digitized, Cleaned Up, It Sounds Like A Whole New Album!" 2009-11-24
By northhollywoodbookfan (los angeles)
Being someone with partial hearing, I was never able to fully enjoy this music in the original format because in the original, the sound quality was sloppy and the whole album/CD sounded like it was buried in mud.

This digitized version, cleaned up and fine-tuned, makes this a first-rate listening experience. Some musical purists may scoff at the improvements, but for me, as a music fan, and not some high-tech critic, these improvements make this CD or MP3 download well worth purchasing.

"Just "Gimme Some Truth" already!!" 2009-07-26
By Goose (East Coast, USA)
John Lennon's 1971 album "Imagine" is as good as it gets! This was John's masterpiece, in my opinion. He hit his peak as a solo artist on this. His previous album - "Plastic Ono Band" was a little hard for some Lennon/Beatles' fans to swallow. Although I believe that "Plastic Ono Band" was an excellent album and more raw and emotional than anything he had ever done (or would do)... "Imagine" was John at his best! It's timeless music! A beautifully produced album that ranks up there with some of his finest Beatles' efforts. I should also note that the remastering job is crystal clear - it's a BIG improvement over the earlier issued CD.

Go buy this album! It should be in any music fan's collection.
