This Mark Knopfler-dominated release from Dire Straits (as if there were any other kind) features the ringing guitar work and clever lyrics we've come to expect from the band over time. The dark, moody gravel of Knopfler's voice mutters, mumbles, and muses through songs like "Telegraph Road" and "Private Investigations" and virtually giggles through the silly patter of "Industrial Disease." The title track and "It Never Rains" are solid, if unremarkable offerings from the band that has come to represent the epitome of one man's vision of good ol' rock & roll. --L.A. Smith

"If there could be a Progressive Rock album from the eighties, this is it!" 2010-07-18
By Rykre (Carson City, Nevada)
This is my second favorite guitar rock album, and is my absolute favorite Progressive Rock guitar album. Second only to Robin Trower's "Bridge of Sighs" album.

"Telegraph Road" is a song about a lone drifter who set up camp and took advantage of the natural luxuries of the environment (water, natural vegetation, and climate), and as other drifter's passed by, they too, decided to set up camp and stay, and as the years went by, this small camp form into a small city where the population grew and a railroad track was to pass through to recognize the establishment of a new found city. That's just the first track. Nearly fifteen minutes worth.

The next track, "Private Investigations" was to give you the dark ambiance of the mysterious, questionable, nuances of being a private detective. You get the "black and white" feel of the old film noir of the silver screen era of the private detective. The guitar work here is so awesome!

Then you get "Industrial Disease", a low charted single from this album, but yet I have yet to see it added to a "best of" Dire Straits collection. It's kind of a "tongue in cheek" approach to your insignificance as an employee of a major factory or corporation. I'm thinking that they keep avoiding to put this song on a greatest hits CD because they probably want you to buy this album directly instead. And I agree that you should. The remaining title track and "It Only Rains" is typical Dire Straits material. But to me, the first three tracks are classic recordings! There wasn't that much material this good in the eighties.

Don't get me wrong. I love eighties pop. But this album qualifies as a late Progressive Rock album. Progressive Rock is most recognized during the early seventies. This album supports a dead, by-gone era that many of us old fossils still cherish as rock's better days.

"Undoubtedly one of their best...." 2010-04-11
By N. Wright (United Kingdom)
'Love Over Gold', the fourth album from Dire Straits, is unquestionably one of the band's strongest efforts. It is easily on a par with 'Brothers In Arms' and is slightly superior to its predecessor 'Making Movies' and also the live set 'Alchemy' which followed it.

Excellent instrumentals and very strong lyrics are present throughout 'Love Over Gold'. Produced by Mark Knopfler whose guitar playing is superb throughout, and drummer Pick Withers is also on top form (this was his last album with the group).

There is not a weak moment on the album and every track rates a mention. The album opens with what is one of the band's best songs of all time, the epic 'Telegraph Road', the lyrics of which tell the sad story of the decline of an industrial town. 'Private Investigations' was the big hit of the album, at least in the UK where it hit # 2 in the charts, regardless of its 7 minute length (the highest position Dire Straits ever achieved in the singles charts in their home country). 'Industrial Disease' was a hit in Canada, and Knopfler's lyrics are witty. Next is the title track of the album, the definitive version being the original 6 minute track found here with a solo performance by Knopfler on acoustic guitar at the end (a rather inferior live version unfortunately found its way onto most Dire Straits compilations apart from the most recent one, 'The Best of Dire Straits and Mark Knopfler: Private Investigations' released in 2005). The last track 'It Never Rains' is another masterpiece. Clocking in at almost 8 minutes, it starts off fairly quietly, before becoming more dramatic midway through, and toward the end it really takes off with a superb guitar solo from Knopfler.

Although there are only five tracks on the album there is over 41 minutes of playing time. This is almost as progressive rock as Dire Straits ever got. The album is sometimes dark, but is easily up there with their best. Thoroughly recommended.

 "Timeless" 2010-03-21

What can I say. After 30 years of listening to everything that Mark Knopfler and Dire Straits made, I still keep listening and enjoying it. For me mark is one of the best rock musicians of this and the past century.

"An epic tour de force" 2009-06-06
By Eclectic Tastes (California)
I feel sorry for the reviewer who said she'd prefer it if the two long tracks were several four minute tracks. Says a lot for her attention span and ability to concentrate (not). I could recommend a few bands for her, but I might get flamed by crowds of 13-year old females.

These tracks are absolutely fantastic. How could you get the amazing music development, slow sustained and incredibly controlled buildup and story theme into four minutes?

This is my favorite album of all times. It contains all of the best Dire Straits tracks with the exception of "Money for Nothing."

Fantabulous.
