"Not traditional Katie, but still worth the listen" 2010-08-31
By Olivia Joy (USA)
I discovered Katie Melua several years ago when she only had two albums out. Like many reviewers, I believe she has incredible vocal talent and have always considered her songs to be witty, thought-provoking, and enjoyable. This new album, while another great show-case of Melua's vocals, has taken a turn away from her previous style. Verging on Indie pop, The House is not as jazz/blues-like as her previous albums. While in the past Melua's albums have mostly show-cased soft acoustics accompanying her voice, this album uses much more enhancing effects with the band. I find there isn't quite as many songs on this album with deep meanings like Melua previously recorded. The sort of songs that make you stop and thinking or lyrics that flow well and have actual meaning.
Still, if you are a Melua fan I would give it a try. If you are new to Katie Melua's music, check out any of her previous albums before trying this one.

 "LOVE IT!" 2010-08-14
By Mary (Washington, DC)
This is my first introduction to Katie Melua, and I love it. Favorites include the theatrical ballad "The Flood," the off-beat "Tiny Alien," and the last four tracks -- "Plague of Love," "God on the Drums, Devil on the Bass," "Twisted" and "The House." It's got me delving back into the older catalogue to explore more of her music. She reminds me at times of Kate Bush, Amanda Palmer (from Dresden Dolls) and the defunct "A Particularly Vicious Rumor," but Katie definitely has her own unique take on things. If you like off-beat, cabaret-ish, singer-songwriters, you'll love this CD.

 ""No Fear Of Heights"." 2010-08-14
By M. Mariba (south africa)
This is her fourth studio album release titled "The House" by the talented Georgian born British singer-songwriter Katie Melua. Her soothing voice, wonderful acoustic/piano compositions & production shine through this new CD release; in the footsteps of her three previous solid CD releases "Call Off The Search", "Pictures" & "Piece By Piece". With hits like "The Closest Thing To Crazy","9 Million Bicycles" & "If I Were A Sailboat", this CD "The House", solidifies Katie Melua as a seriously talented singer-songwriter of note.

For this CD she went to studio (Air Studios, London, UK) with 15 songs, eventully trimmed down to 12 songs for this CD, recorded over 5 months (October 2009 to February 2010) & produced by the legendary William Orbit.

The tracks :
1."I'll Love To Kill You" - excellent opening track : wonderful soothing voice punching notes very well, accompanied by wonderful guitar riffs (composed by Katie Melua & Guy Chambers, rated 5 stars).
2."The Flood" - typical Katie Melua song (composed by Katie Melua, Guy Chambers & Lauren Christy, rated 3 stars).
3."A Happy Place" - a beautiful pacy song (composed by Katie Melua & Guy Chambers, rated 4 stars).
4."A Moment Of Madness" - cabaret styled type song (composed by Katie Melua & Guy Chambers, rated 2 stars).
5."Red Balloons" - a beautiful slow number, great acoustic guitar & lyrics "The sky is full of red balloons; Red balloons are full of broken hearts; Will they burst or drift" (composed by Katie Melua & Polly Scattergood, rated 5 stars).
6."Tiny Alien" - acoustic up-tempo song (composed by Katie Melua & Guy Chambers, rated 4 stars).
7."No Fear Of Heights" - the most beautiful track in the CD : wonderful melody, soothing voice accompanied by great violin sound & great lyrics "I have no fear of heights, No fear of the deep blue sea, Although it could drown me, I know it could drown me" (composed by Katie Melua, rated 5 stars). This is my favourite song from this great CD & hence the title of my review "No Fear Of Heights".
8."The One I Love Is Gone" - a slow reminiscing song (composed by Bill Monroe, rated 2 stars).
9."Plague Of Love" - great up-tempo song, opening sounding like that of "Papa Don't Preach" by Madonna for only few seconds (composed by Katie Melua, rated 4 stars).
10."God On The Drums, Devil On The Bass" - a dark bass laiden song (composed by Katie Melua & Mike Batt, rated 3 stars).
11."Twisted" - a great drum thumping song (composed by Katie Melua & Rick Nowels, rated 4 stars).
12."The House" - a wonderful closure to this CD with this title track : wonderful slow acoustic guitar accompanied by soothing voice & wonderful lyrics "Who is in that house? I opened the door to see; Who is up the stairs? I'm walking foolishly" (composed by Katie Melua, rated 5 stars).

Overall, a great well-rounded CD release, rated a well deserved 4 stars & with "No Fear Of Heights", the sky is no limit for Katie Melua, a highly recommended listening!

"This House Needs Some Re-Decorating." 2010-08-12
By Alan Taylor (Chicago, IL United States)
Let me begin by saying that I think Katie Melua is incredibly talented. I have seen her live and am blown away by her presence and musical prowess on stage, and I own everything she has released. I am equally enamored of Willam Orbit, who produced this record. Sadly, however, this album is by far her weakest offering.

Firstly, the majority of the album's twelve tracks are a bit sparsely produced (for William Orbit, anyway), with most of the focus on vocals and acoustic guitar. If anyone could pull this off, it would be Katie, right? Not so on this record. Having the vocals prominent in the mix works to spotlight some of the most cringeworthy lyrics I've heard in a long time. Tons of lyrical and rhyming cliches abound. Old favorites such as "PAIN & RAIN" and "CRY & DIE" are waiting for you at every turn. "Red Balloon" is a rehash of the typical "Message in a Bottle" lyric. She puts her broken heart into a red balloon, but had she only looked up she would have noticed the sky is full of red balloons. "Will they burst or drift into arms". Not someone's arms, not your ams... just "Arms". Ugh... much of this record sounds like it's set to a third graders poetry. Either clunky, or way too easy to predict. Ultimately, too many of the songs seem to revisit familiar territory. It's all too obvious at times that she's trying to recreate songs she's already written and rewrite lyrics that worked better the first time around, rather than moving forward and trying something new.

Now, I'm not a total hater here. There are a couple of bright spots. The melancholy and theatrical lead single "The Flood" and the equally engaging second single "A Happy Place" are both recommended downloads. "A Moment of Madness" is a fun musical departure, and the album opener, "I'd Love to Kill You" is classic Melua.

Unfortunately, William Orbit's production is very muted on this record, and only shows up in a couple of key spots, leaving you wishing he had done more to pump some life into this somewhat dull affair. As much as I enjoy Miss Melua's music, I doubt I'll being playing this one anywhere near as often as her other albums.

 "Like a haunted house." 2010-08-03
By Nse Ette (Lagos, Nigeria)
Elaborately produced by William Orbit, UK songstress Katie Melua's fourth album "The house" isn't the glitchy electronic dance album one might expect. Lead-off single "The flood" starts off a gentle ballad kicking into high gear with soft Dance beats half way in, and "Plague of love" is upbeat and groovy.

Everything else is lush piano Pop much like the Melua of old. The acoustic "I'd love to kill you" (letting her crystal clear vocals soar), the waltzy vaudeville "A moment of madness", the sombre "No fear of heights" ("When you give me love, I have no fear of heights"), the beautiful old world-sounding ballad "The one I love is gone", the snarling Bluesy "God on the drums, devil on the bass", and the creepy "Twisted".

Highlight has got to be the title track. A soft guitar ballad with ghostly harmonies, weird flourishes, swelling strings and cryptic lyrics about some house, with Melua's vocals starting all hushed and sweeping to skyscraping heights. Absolutely stunning!
